Embracing Hygge: Winter’s Invitation to Slow Down
One of the things we love most about winter is the invitation to embrace Hygge—that beautiful Danish concept of cozy, contented living.
Hygge is all about simplicity and comfort. It’s lighting candles as the sun sets, sipping tea with cold hands wrapped around a warm mug, and finding joy in the quiet moments that make winter feel softer and more beautiful.
Winter is the perfect season to lean into this way of living—a time to create warmth from within, to nourish your body and your home, and to savour the stillness.
Here are a few of our favourite ways to bring a little Hygge into your everyday life:
1. Light beeswax candles as the daylight fades
There’s nothing quite like the gentle flicker of candlelight on a winter’s evening. Our handmade beeswax taper candles, sourced from a small beekeeper in Mullumbimby, bring a warm golden glow to your home—and naturally purify the air while they burn.
2. Brew endless cups of herbal tea
Keep the kettle warm and your favourite tea close by. Herbal teas are a simple pleasure, but they hold so much comfort—nourishing your body and grounding you in the moment.
3. Layer your living spaces with softness
Bring out the throws, blankets, and pillows. Drape them over your couch and armchairs to create little nooks of softness. It’s an instant way to make your home feel more inviting and cozy.
4. Switch to deeper, more nourishing skincare
Winter air can be drying, so this is the time to nourish your skin with richer, hydrating products.
We especially love:
• Deep Skin Silk and Seabuckthorn Moisturiser by Mabel Jane – a winter essential
• Pure Lavender Hand & Body Lotion – calming, comforting and replenishing
5. Indulge in regular herbal steams
Herbal steams are one of our favourite winter rituals—not only do they deeply cleanse and hydrate the skin, they’re wonderful for the respiratory system too.
Pick fresh herbs like rosemary and sage from the garden, pour over hot water, and inhale deeply. It’s a sensory ritual that feels both ancient and luxurious.
And one more thing… Appreciation.
There’s a quiet beauty in winter if you pause long enough to notice.
Take time to breathe in the crisp air, crunch maple leaves underfoot, watch the light slant low through the trees. Let yourself feel wonder. It’s medicine for the soul.
